Kim Davis, a county clerk in Kentucky has led headlines for weeks now because of her refusal to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, because it violates her religious beliefs. I'm tired of her name and giving her any more of my time. All I'll say is I don't care if she worships unicorns. She is paid by the taxpayers of her county to serve ALL citizens of her county. Not a select few. If she can't do her job, leave the cushy money behind and get another job. Maybe Hobby Lobby has an opening for her.Give me a break. First off, the media is sensationalizing a part of school curriculum that includes WORLD History and religions, not only Islam. And of course, people are buying into the hype, threatening to take their kids out of school. Over what? An hour bock of instruction?
Since when has it become intolerable to learn about the rest of the world? Have Americans become so insulated that they think that the world begins and ends within their borders? I hate to break it to them, but the world was there for thousands of years before American came into being.
I hate seeing this kind of outcry about a simple lesson in world religions. I have been to Egypt and Jordan and have found most muslims to be among the most welcoming and friendly people in the world. And guess what? They teach their kids about World History and different religions. Surprise! Islam is a peace loving religion, just like Christianity. It's when it's taken to the extreme that it becomes more sinister. Just like Christianity. Just like every other religion out there.
Atrocities in the name of religion have occurred for thousands of years. Does anyone remember the holocaust? Millions of Jews killed in the name of religion and ethnic cleansing. This country itself was founded because our forefathers wanted to escape religious persecution.
When did we stop becoming a country of tolerance and acceptance and become biased, bigoted and worse?
Yes 9/11 was one of the greatest tragedies this country has seen in this century. But, let's not forget our own history. The Civil War led to roughly 1,264,000 deaths. People will argue about the cause of the civil war. Was it slavery? Was it economics? To me, it doesn't matter. What matters is that we killed over a million of our own.
What about Columbine? What about Aurora, Colorado? What about the Oklahoma City Bombing? What about the killing of millions of Native Americans? What about the Westboro Church? The list goes on and on.
We are no better than anyone else in this world. Fanatics have and always will use religion as an excuse for their murderous behavior, whether they are islamic, christian, jewish or whatever. Hate begets hate.
Until you've walked a mile in someone's shoes, you have no right to judge them. It's not our place to judge anyway. When we face our maker, whoever it may be, we will be called to task for our actions. It shouldn't be done by our fellow humans.
